The modern form of tennis, often referred to as lawn tennis, was developed in England in the late 19th century. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield is credited with popularizing the game in 1873 when he introduced a version of the game called "Sphairistikè." Wingfield's version was played on an hourglass-shaped court and used a set of rules that were the foundation for modern tennis.
