The selection of the living goddess Kumari is a long and careful process. She is chosen from the Newar Shakya caste, usually at the age of 2 to 4 years (Nepal Heritage Society, 2023). Priests look for 32 special qualities, like a calm nature, perfect skin, and fearless eyes. The most difficult test is spending a night alone in a dark room filled with buffalo heads. If she stays calm, she is believed to have the goddess’s spirit. Once chosen, she lives in the Kumari Ghar and appears only at special events.
