roopkund trek in the Garhwal Himalayas will always hold a special place in our hearts. It was a time of many firsts on this journey. Roopkund was our first Himalayan trek, lasting a week. It was the first time we were completely out of our element. And it was the first time we travelled, or rather trekked, as a group.

Even 7 years ago, trekking was not our strong suit. We had done Buxa Fort Trek, an easy day trek in West Bengal, before Roopkund. And, yes, we had done the Amarnath Yatra in July of that year. We only realised how close to nature we could get while trekking after completing the Amarnath Yatra. The yatra was one of our watershed moments. We decided to go on a Himalayan trek after returning from Amarnath, and Roopkund was the destination!

The Skeletal Lake on the Roopkund Trek

What is the significance of the names Skeletal Lake and Mystery Lake? This question lingered for a while before I checked the internet. Hundreds of skeletons and skulls have been discovered around this glacial lake at an elevation of 16499 feet. Where did this skeleton come from? On what fateful day had so many people died? The answers were definitely ambiguous.roopkund trek distance, situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, is shrouded in mystery and myth.

Roopkund is known as the Lake of Reflections.

In her Kali avatar, Goddess Parvati is said to have killed the demon Mahisasur near the Bedni Kund.

Meanwhile, on their way to Kailash, Goddess Parvati felt unclean after killing the demons and desired to take a bath. After all, she had cleaned up the earth's dirt! Lord Shiva created the Lake for the Goddess in order to please her consort. The Goddess dipped herself in the lake's blue waters, where she could see her beautiful reflection. This is why the lake is called Roopkund (roop means "beauty" in Hindi).

While the Goddess bathed, her son Lord Ganesh stood guard at the location, which is now known as Kalu Vinayak. For the first time, you can see Roopkund Lake from here.

Bhaguabasa actually translates into "abode of tiger". Goddess Parvati had left her tiger here before heading to Roopkund for a bath.

The Skeletal Lake is known as Roopkund.

Another local legend has it that the king of Kanauj went on a pilgrimage to Goddess Nanda Devi with his pregnant wife, servants, dance troupes, and others. The king was arrogant and careless with the sanctity of the place. He encountered numerous bad omens along the way, but he continued his journey with pride. He even forgot to pray to the Goddess because he was so engrossed in watching the three royal dancers. The Goddess was enraged and burned three holes in the dancers' feet. Pathar Nachauni is said to have the craters.

Travel to Kathgodam

Our trip to Kathgodam, Uttarakhand, was no less exciting. The train from Delhi station was four hours late. The train was completely packed, and we barely got our seats. In this case, the concept of reserved seating was abandoned. The train arrived late and, as usual, was delayed on the way. We arrived at Kathgodam railway station around 12:30 a.m.!

The next day, we set out for Lohajung, our trek's basecamp. We arrived in Lohajung around 7:30 p.m. after an 11-hour long and exhausting journey. We were later briefed on the ordeal that lay ahead of us for the next six days. Physical strength will simply not suffice. enough, we were told. Tremendous will power and mental strength were required to complete the trek. This was probably meant towards me because Agni was quite fit.
